TV: IT Crowd (Well.. sort of TV)

Just watched another classic British comedy called IT Crowd, basically its about the "inner-workings" of an IT Department with a very stereotypical view of the life "in the basement". More accurate one appears on the Unofficial(?) Synopsis page.

As a big fan of The Office (both the UK/US versions) I thought i'd take a stab at this comedy (its by the same producer!), first impressions? Its funny, typical nerdy stuff in there and very sterotypical of the "classic-new-generation" geek... The openning scene where we here the phone ring and the IT guy is 'taking his own time' to answer it was quite nice, not to ruine any more of it for you take a look for yourself and (in true-nerd-style) download the IT Crowd Epsiode one - Yesterdays Jam *FREE* legally off the site! Theres some good humour there for like-minded geeks (heck some of those even applied to me! - no I havent been to Amsterdam yet:p)

Official IT Crowd | Unofficial(?) IT Crowd

On a small note, I bought a new MY06 Subaru Liberty 2.5i Manual Sedan (Guess which color?) on Tuesday last week, I was planning to go nuts with photo's and blog posts but I havent had the time, maybe sometime this week I will...

The very first "Bug" in a computer.

I've been uber busy with life this last week to update my blog, but heres something to keep you occupied for a few minutes...

The First "Computer Bug"

Moth found trapped between points at Relay # 70, Panel F, of the Mark II Aiken Relay Calculator while it was being tested at Harvard University, 9 September 1945. The operators affixed the moth to the computer log, with the entry: "First actual case of bug being found". They put out the word that they had "debugged" the machine, thus introducing the term "debugging a computer program". In 1988, the log, with the moth still taped by the entry, was in the Naval Surface Warfare Center Computer Museum at Dahlgren, Virginia.

COOL TOOL: CPUIdle to keep your CPU... COOL!

It feels almost like an eternity I've lived without my beloved CPUIdle but just recently a new version of CPUIdle Extreme was released.
A CpuIdle Extreme update has been released. This version contains the following fixes:
  • improved CPU detection for Athlon64, Sempton and Opteron
  • improved CPU detection for Pentium D and Centrino
  • partial rewrite of chipset detection routines
Those of who who dont know what CPUIdle is, it basically sits in your system tray and runs the HTL (Op F4) when your system isnt in use, a better explanation appears on the CPUIdle How It Work Page:
Under normal circumstances the CPU isn't always active but spends much time waiting for the keyboard, harddisk or CD-ROM. What would be more logical than to turn off the CPU for that period? That's exactly what the HLT machine instruction (Opcode F4) does. Whenever the CPU encounters a HLT instruction the clock is halted and the CPU enters suspend mode until an interrupt, NMI, or reset happens. With the advent of power saving microprocessors like the Cyrix Cx486S the HLT instruction elicits an additional benefit. When "Suspend on HLT" is enabled in the configuration register the processor not only stops on HLT but also enters the power saving suspend mode.
Now that the newer processors are supported I've finally started running CPUIdle on my Centrino Notebook (Inspiron 8600) again as well as my main desktop, no system should be without CPUIdle, if anything the handy icon will tell you when your CPU is maxing out (other CPU detectors will show 100% CPU Usage because of CPUIdle - Eg. Task Manager!)

One word of caution though, it may appear like the CPU is being run at full capacity, but infact its not going to affect the CPU's performance (in a negative manner) at all, however if you do play games, encode something or are about to make maximum use of your CPU, its best to disable it - Double Click the icon in the system tray.

Download a copy and try it out!

UPDATE: Security update for WMF Security issue from Microsoft

You heard it here first folks, the update patch to fix the WMF flaw just got released by Microsoft:

HIGHLY recommended download!

COOL TOOL: uTorrent Best BitTorrent Client bar none!

For ages I've been using BitComet as Java clients tend to eat memory like no tomorrow, however BitComet also tends to consume memory (although not as bad as other java clients), if you dont want to waste memory while you've got a torrent client up take a look at µTorrent, it'll run at an insane <10Mb of memory and has *ALL* the functions of BitComet (minus the browser which is probably the reason it eats up more memory). This thing is ultra compact and ultra lightwieght, HIGHLY RECOMMENDED! (Goes nicely with cFosSpeed!)

All p2p clients should try more to be like µTorrent!

COOL TOOL: cFosSpeed - Connection load balancing

If you ever p2p you'll know that pretty soon your going to get timeouts (especially on BT networks), previously I used NetLimiter to control the bandwidth on the p2p Application i used (back then it was Azureus - Memory hogging Java app!), however it was ineffective at times, still throttling my connection and causing me timeouts.

A few months later I switched to this brilliant tool called cFosSpeed. cFos installs a low-level driver that actually allows you to prioritise (or load balance) application's bandwidth. So for instance all standard internet traffic gets high priority (Eg. Web Browsers), where as p2p clients can be given "LOW" and it will manage the connections efficiently. I have to admit that I was pretty adamant at first, but after using it for little over than 3 months now I'm more than impressed. I rarely use "Optimisers" or such tools (like the world of bloated 'RAM Optimizers' out there that dont really do anything useful!) but cFosSpeedis something totally different.

So if you're an avid p2p'er(legal or otherwise) download an evaluation and take a look, they've got a special 9€ price on it till the 31st of January so its even better!

Think you know 3D Audio sound? Listen to this and see!

Stumbled apon this and nearly got scared sheetless... We know sound companies *cough* Creative *cough* drop the "3-D realism" of sound into their marketting jargon but I have yet to feel the true feeling of 3D Realism to its potential (sure Doom III, Half-Life II have it, but still not to my liking...

Well get ready for Holophonic effects. Firstly grab a pair of headphones (I use Sennheiser HD650 & the HD595 ones... awesome!)
or if you dont have one, turn up your speakers and make sure you dont have anything else disracting it (although I'm not sure about the quality from non-headphones!) then download Cereni - Holophonic.mp3 and get ready to be blown away...

I honestly thought someone (namely my sis) was behind me with a box of matches... AWESOME stuff!

Futurama Movie: Good News Everyone!

Some good news to start the new year with, it seems there will be a Futurama Movie coming in 2007 (currently in pre-production) as the page states on IMDBs entry for Futurama.
